The Primary Suite with Sitting Area
Your bedroom is calling and longing for a little love. While we often obsessively decorate (and redecorate, and redecorate again) the rest of our homes, bedrooms often get left behind. This may be because they are more private and less seen by visitors, or because the main activity in this room is of course sleep.
Rearranging your bedroom can improve your mood and sleep cycle, so there’s no reason not to optimize this space like the rest of your home. Whether you’re dealing with a strange layout or a small space, there are plenty of ways to improve it. We asked two of our favorite designers, Aly Morford and Leigh Lincoln of Pure Salt Interiors, to share their insights on bedroom layouts they use again and again.
The In-and-Out Primary Bedroom
Designing a room surrounded by doors on three sides can be tricky, but the end result is worth the effort. “While we weren’t working with a large floor space here, the views outside this primary bedroom were grand,” Morford recalls. By using pendant lights, we maximized the functional space in the room. The end result is an airy and open oasis!
The Children’s Bunkhouse
Built for the most memorable sleepovers, this double layout is as suitable for growing children as it is for guests. “This is the client’s vacation home, so every room had to be designed with additional guests in mind,” says Morford. Adding a bunk bed maximized sleeping space, while minimalist furnishings avoided visual clutter.
The Small-and-Symmetrical Primary Suite
Giving a primary suite a royal feel while having limited square footage isn’t always easy, but once again Pure Salt’s designers point out that less is more. “This primary bedroom was a fun challenge because we were working with a particularly small space,” Lincoln explains.
The Open Walking Space
In this bedroom we had a good layout and very open flow between the balcony and the primary bathroom areas. It was important to keep the passage to the balcony open and uninterrupted, resulting in a spacious and generous passage between the bed and the TV.
The Hearth Function
When a room has so much wonderful historic character, it is only right to utilize it to its full potential. “This project was a fun challenge,” says Lincoln. “We wanted to ensure that some of the room’s signature design elements, such as the mantelpiece, would be clearly visible.”
The Corner Entry
An angled entrance in the corner creates an unexpected flow in this bedroom, but fortunately the square footage was sufficient to prevent multiple pieces of furniture from becoming an obstacle. “Every bedroom with high ceilings deserves furniture and decorations that celebrate this!” says Morford.
The Kids’ Command Center
Proof that a small space can still have a big wow factor. “This is probably one of our favorite children’s rooms we’ve designed so far,” says Lincoln. “Our clients wanted something unique for their son to make his room special.”
Adding a pegboard system provides extra wall storage and a built-in desk without having to cram a lot of furniture into a small space, resulting in an incredibly cool room that still feels open and airy.
